Forget about balance…
I might be fixin to make a few people uncomfortable or maybe you will just plain disagree with me but here it goes…forget about ‘balance’.
It’s a fairy tale, a myth, a dream, an illusive concept that you will never achieve. The sooner we can learn this lesson, the better. I used to run around like a chicken with my head cut off feeling stressed because I was not ‘balanced’. If I had a penny for every time someone told me I needed to be more balanced, I’d be rich. If I had a penny for every time I told myself that very same thing, I’d be the richest person to have ever lived.
A few years ago I was thinking about how I could achieve this mystical ‘balance’ and it hit me! The problem with this concept is that we think of ‘balance’ as a scale that evenly distributes work and life. It’s like trying to look like the airbrushed models on the front of fashion magazines, beautiful image but impossible to achieve.
I needed to change my paradigm. Then it hit me! I had one of those AH-HA moments when the light bulb went off. “Ding ding ding Lisa…balance is not a scale. It’s a pendulum!” On one side is work and one side is life. At any one time, I may be all the way on the work side, all the way on the life side or somewhere in the middle. But here is the cool part…this change in my thought process helped me stay in the moment, no matter where the pendulum landed.
I now give myself permission to swing to the business side of the pendulum with intense focus and do the same by swinging to the life side of the pendulum with just as much vigor. I communicate this with my family and friends. “Today is all about us…let’s go play” or “Today I need to get this project done, I won’t be home for dinner.”
At times a pendulum, propelled by inertia, swings back and forth….but eventually where does it land? Right in the middle.
Thinking about balance as a pendulum gives us permission to be in the moment and completely present no matter where the pendulum lands.
